FAQ

Every lawn is different. Even if your neighbor has the same grass type, there may be a difference in the soil. In our Q&A section, you can ask specific questions and get the answers you’ve had little success in finding elsewhere.

What Grass Seed to Use For a Bad Surface?

I would suggest working some organic matter, compost or good loam, along with some seaweed meal, into the top ten centimetres or so to increase the fertility and water holding capacity of the lawn

Dead Spots From Dog Urine

All dog urine does not automatically kill grass. There must be a fair amount of urine applied to one spot. Female dogs are more of a problem because they tend to pee all at once in one spot. The males tend to spread it around as they mark the area. Big dogs are more of a problem because they produce a higher volume than do the little dogs. A lawn that is highly fertilized is more vulnerable because it already has a high nitrogen level. A lawn growing on compacted soil with only two inches roots is more vulnerable because the urine stays more concentrated since it can’t drain away. Newly seeded or sodded lawns are also more vulnerable to urine damage.

Measuring The Area of Your Lawn

The easy way to do this is to draw the shape on paper first of all – this gives you a rough plan of the lawn on which to write your measurements. Next, go out to your lawn and choose the straightest edge of your lawn – start at one end of that edge. Measure the distance across the lawn from where you’re are standing, then write that down on the plan. Then move one metre over and measure again.Keep measuring across the lawn at these one metre spacings, writing each down. Lastly, add up all of these measurements, and divide that number total by the number of measurements that you took, giving an average distance. This is then repeated at a ninety degree angle. The first result is then multiplied by the second result to give the total area of the lawn. This is a rough measurement, but it gives a surprisingly accurate area on the vast majority of lawns, and is far easier than methods which only provide a bit more accuracy
